The background
Started in 1906 and officially called the ‘union’ from 1923, Sheffield University Union of Students is steeped in history. Regularly voted the Best Students’ Union in the UK, they employ over 800 people.
The union is part of The University of Sheffield. A member of the Russell Group of leading UK research universities. And rated as 93rd best university in the world.
With credentials like this, they need to offer their cohort a world class student experience.
The challenge
We were asked to help Sheffield University Union of Students with the upgrade their ageing POS hardware. They wanted to deliver a far more efficient and faster service to students during peak times.
Their existing till terminals were not just slow but were also running on old Windows XP machines. These were no longer supported by Microsoft and this posed a big risk to the union.
The solution
We were best placed to help having worked with over one hundred similar scenarios for universities, unions and in further/higher education.
We quickly and cost efficiently upgraded the union over to our recommended 15″ touch screen till terminals. Each till being linked to our back office software.
The results
This upgrade gave Sheffield University Union of Students, superior till functionality and real time reporting via the back office suite.
The set up not only worked well but it really complimented their newly refurbished retail outlets.
Moving away from the old Windows XP machines also helped to protect the union in terms of cyber security as well as data and payment security.
In summary
This was a much needed upgrade. The solution we have installed will safeguard the union for many years to come. They can also bolt on many integrations and software additions to help their business profitability in the future. Things like wholesale ordering via an A.F.Blakemore integration. Plus there are many other great add ons for students’ unions like self-serve, cashless campus etc.
